red legs

I had a very dark day a couple of days ago and what pulled me out of it was taking photos. It is hard not to feel low when thinking about money, or the extreme lack of it. SF is an expensive city, I don’t have the design job I wanted, I’m down to a couple hundred dollars. I can’t even afford to go to Kinko’s to scan since it costs money by the hour, so any photos I take now have to be shot AGAIN with digital to show them.

But as I said, picking up my camera again dissipated those blues. These aren’t spectacular in composition or idea, but I just felt exited waiting for the time to come to peel them apart, and wearing red, and standing in white light.

That’s Samoa in the right of this photo. Super playful, with a giant belly than flops around when she runs but looks normal-sized otherwise. Obsessed with laser pointers and attacking my foot under the covers.

at a loss

Halloween is my favorite holiday but I haven’t come up with a costume idea yet. Last year I thought of Medusa but changed my mind at the last minute to be Miss Argentina, the receptionist in Beetlejuice. So I can still probably be Medusa with no risk of repeating costumes, buuuut I just am not feeling it as much.

A magpie, hmm? Could be great.

I still want something fancy and fantastic, though.

rackk and ruin

My favorite etsy for some time now has been Rackk and Ruin, an eclectic jewelry designer who won me over a year ago by a necklace made with horsehair from a violin.

I love this necklace because I love skeleton keys, but especially because having a screwdriver on the end is so freaking unpredictable. (And utilitarian!) I wish I had the ingenuity to think of things like this, piecing things together that I find appealing but making them better by juxtaposition.

Here are some other past favorites, ones I wanted to buy but were snatched up by other people.

I love kyanite…this was made from a double cable stop from a bike. I don’t even know what that is.

If I had my ears pierced, these would be mine. (Horsehair from a violin!)

Aaaand, finally, leather and strips from a peacock feather.

pimp my ride

If I had a bike like this I would ride it every day.
natalia on a bike

Unfortunately I only own a mountain bike in gray pearl metal, current location: Indianapolis. I don’t like excessive sparkles on cars, bikes, nailpolish… or really anything except a sidewalk with lots of mica in it so that it glistens in the sunlight. I need my old beach cruiser(s) from living in southern California and I would attempt this floral finish somehow! And by the way, this is my favorite model, Natalia Vodianova.

max

max

The glove tips are removable! But the best part, obviously, is the hood. Last year I was considering going as Max for Halloween, but I thought it would be too hot for Cincinnati weather. Perfect for San Francisco’s permanent fall weather though; however, with the movie coming out in two weeks, a billion people are likely to dress like that and I’d rather stand out. It was like dressing as the Joker from the Dark Knight last year. WAAAYYY too topical.

If only I had $460 to drop..although I think this would make a great DIY for myself. (Add that to my DIY list of beading barrettes, beading tights, sewing lace collars onto two velvet dresses, and stenciling onto our kitchen table after Brian finishes painting it white.)

apartment inspiration

After 3.5 years of changing apartments every three months thanks to DAAP’s curriculum of 3 months school/3 months internship tradeoffs, I am seriously tired of not having an apartment that looks like my own. I’ve never thought of myself being a good decorator, but my collection of knick-knacks that I have for photoshoots (antlers. macaw feathers. spiny shells. velvet riding hats.) shows that at least I have cool taste.

crown of nature

So moving to SF gives me a better opportunity of making a home for myself. I have been collecting images of places and things in hopes of creating better ideas for each room.

I guess I have a theme of bright colors, intricate detail, old but bright objects. My favorite color is pale teal but I pretty much want each room in the apartment to have a color theme.

bathroom: black and white
kitchen: red and white
hallway: woodsy colors
bedroom: deep saturated night blues
living room: pale teal and emerald

Hopefully Brian and I complete all apartment doings within the next month because I am pretty tired of not having people using the excuse that our apartment is in shambles. The kitchen table is being rebuilt and painted as Brian’s main project and it will eventually have a red ladder coming out of the center for plants and cats to hang out on.

road trippin’

From the point of me graduating from a 5 year college in June 2009 led to rapid changes in my life…at least, when it comes to my geographical location.
(A quick recourse for those who know nothing about me: I am from North Carolina, went to DAAP at the University of Cincinnati from 2004-2009, and then moved 3,000 miles away to San Francisco. Actually, the moving part was in the middle of August after a few months of traveling here and there in the midwest.)

Nearly mauled by wild bison in Roosevelt National Park, hiking in Glacier National Park and seeing deer and picking alpine flowers, and levitating hats were highlights. I also had two cat-escaping-from-cabin incidents, two bald tires, a messed up alignment to fix, a car so filled to the brim we couldn’t see in any direction, and only 5 pairs of shoes. If you aren’t female then you may never understand that particular dilemma.

Incredibly goofy, or incredibly creepy?
