getting ready to DIY

I’ve never shown the internet my amazing horseshoe crab lamp I got on etsy in December, so here it is hanging out on my back. I pretty much went crazy over it during a period of being jobless (at the time), so when I sold my car, it was the first item I bought after friends’ Christmas presents who haven’t received gifts from me in years. Byebye Focus, hello beautiful wall light (and happy friends!)

So, last week during my off-time from work I’ve been compiling a long list of things to do, either for fun or for business.

1. Think of a decent name for my etsy shop. (SOIMPORTANTWHYAMISOBADWITHWORDSSOMETIMES?! CALLIPYGIAN!!)
2. Carve a stamp out of rubber erasers to use on business cards. (Only after shop name is created.)
3. Finish beading the tattered 1920′s dress Sarah Cork gave me so I can wear it to the first fancy thing I can think of.
4. Make antler bobby pins.
5. Make a tote bag for groceries! I’m terribly annoyed with the recycled plastic ones IGA gives us now, because they smell awful and the cats claw their way into the under-the-sink cabinet to chew on them.
6. Bead some tights, kinda like in this tutorial or the maker of my favorite tights: bebaroque.
7. Make a short dressy cape. Maybe black velvet? Or maybe that’s too vampiresque…
8. Paint some frames to look cooler than they are currently. (One soon to hold my Caitlin Shearer print of Margot Tenenbaum!)
9. Re-design my website and blog. I know I just did this in October but…I feel like it isn’t me so much as my old. But Flash websites are kinda tired, so I need to combine the crafty, collage style of my old with the simplicity of my new.

It really is imperative I come up with a new shop name since “amaliaslash” is kinda boring. Extremely boringgggg. Any suggestions from you <5 readers? Words I like…chimera cloud key feather nest wood handheld paper gilded magic golden antler dream star aurora linen talon quill birdcage claw eclipse wing stitch prism vine

Brian thinks it should just be “amalia chimera” like my internet moniker/website, but I wanted something separate (but connected) for the store. Hmm..

  1. Your shop is just photos, no? What about chimeraofcameras? Wasn’t that a name of yours somewhere at some point? Also, Brian has a point about keeping the names the same. Etsy buyers can be stupid, and if they happen to recognize your name from teh interwebz, they might be more inclined to buy your stuff on Etsy. Just a thought, though. I suppose if the Etsy name were connected/similar enough it would have the same effect. BUT ANYWAYS. That’s just my 2 cents.

I like your hair in that picture. Is it fishtailed? Is that a star fish in it?

If I had to count on my fingers for the math spam blocker, does that make me stupid?

    • boo spam blocker. had to test whether i was supposed to copy or add.

    • It doesn’t mean you’re stupid, just that you’ve regressed to a stage of being 3. Like in Flowers for Algernon, when they teach the dude to be super-smart and then slowly he reverts back to being handicapped. Wait. Now it sounds like I’m dissing you, but it’s only a joke because you are more like the dude in his unreverted (yeah I just made up that word so what) self, being a grad student and also top ten in our class in school? I think?

Also I just found out that Flowers for Algernon is #43 on most-often-banned-books list, which is weird because I remember reading it when I lived at 818 Onslow St, which means before I was in third grade? Why in the heck was I allowed to read that hahaha?!

My spam defenses always add up to 10 so I can just open up Photobooth and be all “gimme 5″ and we slap hands and that’s my counting method. It probably just senses that I own it so it wants to go easy on me.

Alright, so, to the real stuff. Chimera of Cameras was my display name on eljay, threadless, and here if you look at it on Google Reader and the bottom of the page. So never a user name itself, but very often a display. But my shop wasn’t meant to be just photos- in fact, I left out on my to-do list “finally put up giant pile of vintage clothes on etsy” because I have all of these lovely dresses that no longer fit me, and some cool shoes that never fit me but I bought anyway since they were all under $5 and popular with people who dress like me.

So, I always loved how chimera and camera sound the same, but ‘of’ is a weird word so if I were to use it, I’d rather it just be “chimera camera” or “camera chimera.” The first sounds like a mythological camera repair shop. Whoops!

And yes, my hair is fishtailed, I just learned on Friday night while rendering for work! So I’ve been doing it every day to get better, since the first time was really messy. And I got the starfish from a thrift store who was selling a hideous shadow box that I bought to collage into, and I ripped out the shells in it. (The starfish was the only interesting one anyway.)

      Longlonglong comment.

  2. tight tutorials! i looked up some of those awhile ago. right now my tights have chevrons. love it.

yes, keeping the name the same would be easiest, but i also like chimeraofcameras.

ok, i must leave to gaze lovingly at my new miu miu boots. (and do work?) it’s troo luv, y’all! http://bit.ly/b1eh0q

    • Oooh, you should take pictures and show me! How long did it take you? I keep thinking I want to make some but then I seem to rip tights often, especially on the bottom when I walk around without shoes and snag them on wooden floor specimens. So then I think I would be devastated if I spent a million years beading, only to eff up the tights themselves. Or worse, snag a string of beads on something and rip it allllll around.

I also plan on dying tights, either dipdye or made to look like watercolor (kinda like cocorosa’s but more in color blocks), but the ones with too much spandex won’t dye. I think the softer kinds like bamboo would do fine, though.

Your boots are suh-weeet! I love riding boots, but I look like a goof in them because my thigh-to-calf ratio is double. Gotta keep working on that. I especially love that they are two-toned, girl you a bALLAAA

  3. Hey Amalia, it’s Sarah (ecky_ducky from Threadless, waaaay back).
I just wanted to say (and hopefully this doesn’t sound outrageously creepy), but I love your face. I just love. Your face. Come to Australia so I can shoot you, damnit.
    That is all.
    Over and out.
