I came up with the concept of using fire and light to symbolize the relationships in the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which start out burning hot and end up dying out, only to be re-lit. I also thought that focus was an important element to convey the forgetting process that happens in the movie, like a dream you are trying to remember as it slowly slips out of focus and out of your mind...
